Refrigeration Plant Operator

Course Description
This 45-hour theory course is designed to assist students in preparing for the Jurisdictional Examination to obtain a Refrigeration Plant Operator certificate.
This course will cover the basic principles of mechanics, refrigeration and refrigerants, electricity, aircompression, pumps, building safety, design with respect to the operation and maintenance of refrigeration and cooling systems such as those found in arenas.
Live, Instructor-led Online, Distance Education
Students will attend live, web-based classes which allow for live interaction with the instructor and other students. Students will get to know the instructor and their fellow classmates just like a regular face-to-face course.
Classes will include lectures, videos, quizzes, assignments, and other real-time presentations that are designed to best prepare students to write the jurisdictional exam at a date, time and location that is suitable for everyone.
Great Plains College will provide students with free access to the online platform in which to participate in live sessions and access course assignments, practice exams, chapter quizzes, etc.
The instructor is dedicated to the success of each student. Extra help, additional review sessions, and support to students provided outside of regular course hours are often made available and are scheduled at discretion and availability of the instructor.

Lanier Technical College (LTC) Ammonia Program is not a “Simulated” program. They instruct with a “LIVE” Ammonia Lab. LTC offers’ several courses related to Ammonia Refrigeration, which train workers to operate and maintain an ammonia refrigeration system and how to respond if the system malfunctions.

The Second-Class Refrigeration Course is a six-month course designed to help facilities train their staff to obtain a Second-Class Refrigeration ticket so that they can continue to meet the Department of Labour and Advanced Education’s codes and regulations.
This course is offered through a partnership with the Recreation Facility Association of Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency (NSAA), Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC), and the Department of Labour and Advanced Education. It consists of several in-class sessions at NSCC Akerley Campus and online training, which takes six months. Once you have attended all the mandatory in- class sessions and passed the online requirements you will be eligible to write the final exam administered by the Department of Labour and Advanced Education (Technical Safety Division). When you pass the DOL exam and have 2000 eligible hours, signed off by your chief engineer, you can be certified.
The Second-Class Refrigeration Course runs from January to June every year. Registration begins in August of the year prior. The final exam will take place in June of each calendar year.
